to your pool

Swimming after adding chlorine to a pool is generally safe, but there are a few things to keep in mind. The most important thing to remember is to stay hydrated. Chlorine can cause dehydration, so drink plenty of fluids before, during, and after swimming.

Another thing to keep in mind is that chlorine can cause skin irritation. If you experience any skin irritation, stop swimming and get out of the pool. Finally, chlorine can cause eye irritation, so be sure to wear sunglasses while swimming.

FACT: Drinking methanol, ethanol, or bleach has no effect on preventing or curing COVID-19 and can be extremely dangerous.

Methanol, ethanol, and bleach are all poisonous substances. They can cause disability and death if consumed. Methanol, ethanol, and bleach are sometimes used in cleaning products to kill viruses on surfaces, but they should never be consumed. They will not kill the virus in your body and will cause damage to your internal organs.

To protect yourself from COVID-19, disinfect objects and surfaces that you touch frequently. You can do this with diluted bleach or alcohol. Make sure to thoroughly clean your hands and avoid touching your eyes, mouth, or nose.

It is always best to retest the water before entering a pool or spa after adding chemicals to ensure that the levels are safe. For application and dosing information, always read and follow the manufacturer's label instructions carefully. Also, adhere to all manufacturer's pool equipment instruction guidelines.

Liquid Chlorine: It is generally safe to wait about 4 hours after adding liquid chlorine, or until levels reach 5 ppm or lower, depending on how much you have added and the size of your pool.

After Shocking Your Pool: Swimming is safe once your chlorine levels reach 5 ppm or lower, preferably 3 ppm. Depending on the type of shock and the amount used, a minimum of 24 hours to a couple of days is typical.

After Adding an Algaecide: Some algaecides are safe to swim in within minutes of application, while others necessitate longer wait times. Specific time guidelines can be found on the manufacturer's label.

After Adding Muriatic Acid: Muriatic acid can cause hot spots of acid in the water, which can burn or irritate your skin. Wait at least 30 minutes to an hour after adding it to your pool to allow the acid to mix with the water.

Following the addition of pH, alkalinity, and clarifier: After adding water balancing chemicals, it is recommended to wait at least 20 minutes to an hour.

Following the addition of calcium chloride to increase calcium hardness: After using calcium chloride in your pool, you should wait 2-4 hours (or one full cycle through the filter) before swimming.

Anyone who owns a pool has heard children clamoring to know when they can swim after the chemicals have been added. When bombarded by impatient children, it's tempting to cave and say "go ahead, jump in" before the recommended amount of time for safe swimming has passed. The truth is that if swimmers enter the pool before the chemicals have had time to dilute and disperse, they may experience skin and eye irritation. Ideally, you should do your chemical testing and balancing when no one is going to use the pool. When that isn't possible, we've provided some guidelines to follow when wondering how long to wait to swim after adding chemicals.

Here are some recommendations for each type of treatment.:

Wait between 20 minutes and an hour for

  • Alkalinity treatments
  • pH balance
  • Calcium balance
  • Stabilizer
  • Clarifier
  • Algaecide

After 20 minutes of diluting and dispersing, these chemicals are considered swim safe. To be safe, wait an hour before allowing swimmers to return to the pool. The kids may find it difficult to wait, but everyone can benefit from at least a one-hour swim break..

Wait Overnight for

  • Pool Shock

There is no getting around the fact that you must wait 12 to 24 hours after adding pool shock to the water before swimming. "Shocking the pool" usually refers to adding a large amount of liquid or crystal chlorine to the water to quickly raise chlorine levels. Depending on how frequently the pool is used, this will most likely have to be done once or twice a week. When no one will be using the pool for an extended period of time, it is best to shock it at night. Pool shock raises the level of chlorine in the water to the point where it is definitely irritating to the skin and eyes.

Testing, Testing

To find out if your chlorine and other chemical levels are safe for swimming, test the water. The magic numbers for proper chlorine levels are 1 - 4 ppm. Bathers will be irritated if the chlorine level is too high. It will not be effective to kill bacteria and algae if the level is too low.

You should test the chemical levels in your pool water at least once a week, and more frequently during the summer and peak usage periods. It is a good idea to become acquainted with the correct concentrations of all the products you add to your pool water. The time guidelines listed above are good to follow, but testing is the most reliable way to answer the question of how long to wait after adding chemicals before swimming.

There are several excellent pool chemical testing kits available on the market. Aqua Pools sells liquid test kits as well as testing strips.. If you are unfamiliar with pool testing or need assistance getting your chemicals to the proper levels, please contact our professional staff for more information. You can even bring a sample of your pool water into one of our showrooms and we will analyze it.
